Elvin Joseph Sanico was one of the best professors I was privileged to have at the UP National Institute of Physics in Diliman. His use of the continuity equation for steady one-dimensional flow to prove the "silent waters run deep" axiom was really cool!

Tuesday, Nov 9, 2004, 12:07 PMMy father is celebrating his 58th birthday today. Just in his late fifties, Lamberto E. Antonio is considered as one of the pillars of contemporary Philippine literature. Critics say that he "is the most persuasive voice in contemporary Tagalog poetry, a poet who speaks for the oppressed, whether peasant or worker, without any touch of affectation." His reason for being can be seen in this timely poem:
SA KAARAWAN NG MAKATA
ni Lamberto E. Antonio
Gugutumin lang daw ako sa pagsulat;
Ngunit ang panulat itong aking buhay.
(Sa palad ay lubhang mailap ang pilak
Sapagkat sa dustang uri nabibilang).
Mahigit dalawang dekada sa mundo:
Mga taong saklot ako ng pighati,
Pangarap, pag-asa, lugod at silakbo
Na naitutulang nagdurugong ngiti.
Nagdaan sa aking buhay ang umasa
Laban sa pag-asa, pagkat ang damdamin
At diwa'y may sapot ng pangungulila
Na hindi maugat ang huklubang dahil;
Limit kong ituring na isang tadhana
Ang karalitaa't panagimpang bigo:
Ang buhay ko't lahat ng buhay sa lupa,
Itinakdang maging hungkang at baligho;
Ngunit nakita kong may libong kawangis
Ang danas kong hindi sinlubha't sintindi
Ng danas ng ibang kahit tumatangis,
May pag-asang muli't muling nagsisindi.
Paano pa nga ba maisisiwalat
Ng isang makata ang katotohanan
Sa gutom ng laksang kauring mahirap
Kung ang panulat ko'y aking bibitiwan?
Despite the prospect of seeing his family go hungry, I'm glad that he never let go of the pen. In 1978, He wrote the script for Insiang, the first Filipino film to be showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. He is the author of several critically acclaimed books - Hagkis ng Talahib, Pagsalubong sa Habagat (1986 National Book Award for Poetry), and Pingkian at Apat Pang Aklat ng Tunggalian (1997 National Book Award for Poetry).
A Palanca awardee 10 times over, he has also won the grand prize for the Epic Narrative in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Literary Competition, and was hailed Makata ng Taon by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. He also received the Gawad Manuel L. Quezon and Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas.
His other accomplishments include the translation of the literary works of Gabriel García Márquez, Dylan Thomas, Octavio Paz, Rainer Maria Rilke, Arthur Conan Doyle, Leopold Senghor, Salvatore Quasimodo, Usman Awang, and Rabindranath Tagore. He also translated Renato Constantino's A Past Revisited (Ang Bagong Lumipas) in 1997 and served as Editor-in-Chief of Diyaryo Filipino, Pilosopong Tasyo, and Kabayan.
Thanks So Much Sir Engels!
